KIOSB D3: Live life full of color!
For today’s Kickin’ It Old School Blog-a-thon post, we’re supposed to fill out a color-related meme, so I decided to create the above image to accompany this post. It’s a pushing-myself-outside-of-my-comfort-zone piece, as it looks like a kid drew it! And it’s not professional (“recovering graphic designer” here). But it’s colorful and this post is full of fun kid-like questions. And my niece was awesome enough to share her crayons with me, so I’m sharin’ this super simple drawing with you.
What’s the first thing you think of when you think of red?
Apples! Honeycrisps are my current favorite.
Closest red thing to you?
The top of a maraca. Olé!
What is the last thing that made you angry?l;./¬
(Note: As I was formatting this to post, my niece came and sat on my lap and added those extra characters at the end of the sentence. They look a bit like an angry face, so I’m leavin’ ’em!)
I believe it was the injustice around the lack of basic healthcare for many, many people. I think there’s a difference between being angry (just getting mad about something because your ego gets bruised) and being righteously angry about something (the injustices of the world that need to be addressed).
Are you a fan of romance?
Yes, but I think romance should be about what’s meaningful and sweet for any given person (or couple) and not some pre-designed idea of roses, chocolates, flowers, and moonlit strolls.
Do you have a temper?
Yes, but I find that I rarely let it get the best of me anymore. I think we get angry for a reason, and it’s about figuring out what that reason is in order to get our “temper” in check.
What’s the first thing you think of when you think of green?
Grass! Man, I am really, really digging the idea of Spring!
Closest green thing to you?
Some kids’ blocks. (They’re ALL the colors!!)
What’s your favourite green environment?
Since we’re in the midst of winter here, what comes to mind are the conservatories at Garfield Park and the Chicago Botanic Gardens. It’s quite magical to be able to step into a warm, humid, super green environment indoors while it’s frigid outside.
Are you jealous of anyone right now?
Ah, green with envy… A wise woman told me years ago to follow the strains of jealousy to figure out what it is I want, which I’ve done ever since. So, no, I’d say that I’m not currently jealous of anyone. I used to be jealous of women who always looked really put together, so I went internal on that and realized that I wanted to have clothes that I enjoyed wearing (comfortable, colorful and classy would be a good description) and that I could look “well put together” in. So I focused on building a wardrobe of clothes, shoes and accessories that I now really enjoy wearing every day!
Are you a lucky person?
I think we create our own “luck” in life through positive thinking and getting ourselves in alignment with our purposes for being on this planet. I’ve found in my own life that if I’m doing what I feel I was put here to do (currently feeling it around this coaching work and a number of other things), suddenly things just seem to fall into place a little easier. That’s what I love helping other people figure out for themselves, too.
What’s the first thing you think of when you think of purple?
My favorite color!
Closest purple thing to you?
Some purple stripes on my socks.
Do you like being treated like royalty?
I like being treated as a noble soul, and I think everyone should be!
Do you like mysterious things?
I do love mysterious things, and I think that life is the most mysterious thing of all!
Are you intuitive?
Yes. No question there. But we all have the capacity to be. It’s about consciously developing our sense of intuition — learning to listen to it, follow it, and slowly develop an understanding (or an ongoing attempt at understanding!) of it.
What’s the first thing you think of when you think of blue?
A blue whale.
Closest blue thing to you?
One of those pop-up tunnels for kids to crawl through. (Can you tell I’m currently surrounded by a lot of kids’ stuff?!)
Are you good at calming people down?
I like to think so. But it’s more about holding space for people to emote first, which then often automatically creates a sense of calm. It’s not about shushing people, or keeping them from expressing what they’re really feeling.
What’s your favourite body of water (i.e. lake, ocean, etc)?
The Pacific Ocean! I love it.
What was the last thing that made you cry?
Listening to my sister Anna’s music. I find that I tear up when I see people doing what they were put here to do. It’s really quite a joy and an honor when we’re able to witness that sort of thing.
Are you a logical thinker?
Yes, which can be a really interesting mix with also working to be intuitive. I think it’s about finding a balance between following our heart / gut (intuition) and our logical train of thought.
What’s the first thing you think of when you think of yellow?
The SUN! I love sunshine. So much.
Closest yellow thing to you?
My bright yellow scarf!
What was one of the happiest times of your life?
Moving overseas when I was a kid. A family vacation a few years back on Sanibel Island, staying right on the beach. Becoming an aunt. And today is pretty darn good, too.
What’s your favourite holiday?
Thanksgiving, I think. I love Thanksgiving-related foods, I love memories of the whole extended family getting together when I was a kid, and… I really love gravy (it needs its own mention).
What makes you happy?
People! Family. Friends. Kids. Helping people learn. Overcoming fears. Holding space for people to be all of who they are, without judgment. Sunshine! Music. Reading a great book. Cooking and baking, especially when it’s for more than just me. Making people laugh. Making new connections. Traveling to new places. Experiencing new things. Swimming. Dancing.
What’s the first thing you think of when you think of pink?
Honestly, the first thing I think is, “Ew, pink!” I’m not a fan of pastel pinks and never liked pink at all when I was young (partly because purple was my favorite and partly because pink is pushed as the color for girls), however I do like really rich, bold pinks now.
Closest pink thing to you?
Funnily enough, a pink plastic egg with the letter ‘H’ on it (not mine — another one of my niece’s toys).
What sweet things do you like?
I love baked goods. Cookies, pies, cheesecake. (All of this is really funny because I’ve been gluten-, dairy- and sugar-free for years now, so I rarely eat this kind of stuff, and when I do it’s highly modified and free of all of those things. But they still hold a special place in my heart!)
Are you sensitive?
Yes. I recently wrote this post on Facebook about being a sensitive person: “To my fellow sensitive people… Do not let the world harden you. You are sensitive for a reason. You are a balance to the world. You bring us back from the edge of harshness. You remind us of love and compassion. You have those sensitivities for a reason. They are a great strength. Learn what they are telling you.”
What is your favourite flower?
Ohhhh… I love all kinds of flowers. Roses remind me of Haifa, Israel. Teuila, Bird of Paradise, Hibiscus and Plumeria (so gorgeous!) remind me of Samoa. And, of course, having a name that is also a flower, I can’t help but hold a special corner in my heart for heather.
Do you have a crush on someone?
I kind of have a crush on life right now!
What’s the first thing you think of when you think of orange?
My sister Anna, as it’s her favorite color. Also, oranges because now I’m craving one!
Closest orange thing to you?
A small basketball in the next room over. (There needs to be more orange in the world!)
Do you dress up for Halloween?
I didn’t this year, but normally I do.
What gives you the warm fuzzies?
When people do really sweet, meaningful things for each other. Also, baby hugs.
What would your superpower be?
The ability to teleport! Oh man, that’d make travel so incredibly, ridiculously easy.
What’s the first thing you think of when you think of brown?
Closest brown thing to you?
The couch I’m sitting on.
What is your favourite type of chocolate?
I eat carob vs. chocolate these days, but when I was a kid it was anything Hershey’s, especially after we visited and toured the Hershey’s factory in PA.
What makes you feel grounded?
Paint the wood or always leave it au natural?
I love, love, love, love, love wood floors. So I dig wood au natural for the most part. But! I also love refurbishing old furniture pieces and when it’s cheap wood, it gets painted. But good quality wood should always go uncovered!
What’s the first thing you think of when you think of white?
Snowwww. While I’m not a fan of winter and cold weather (especially the gray skies and short days), I do love those magical nights where there’s a fresh snow and the light of the sun is so bright off the moon that it’s bright enough to seem like daytime in the middle of the night. I usually experience about one per winter and they are so unique and magical!
Closest white thing to you?
A stack of paper waiting to be drawn on. Oh, the possibilities!
Do you always try to keep the peace?
No. I love being a mediator and could see doing that professionally at some point (or tying it in to coaching work), but it’s not always about “keeping the peace.” You have to let people have their voice. It can be done respectfully — i.e. it’s not about having a knock-down, drag out fight to see who can be the loudest or most dramatic — but I think it’s better for people to be honest sometimes vs. quiet/“peaceful.”
Do you like to play in the snow?
Yes, when I really can play in it! And as long as I can have a fire and some hot tea after!
Are you afraid of going to the doctors or dentist?
Doctors, mostly no. Hospitals, yes. Dentists, mostly yes. I could write a whole post about this.
What’s the first thing you think of when you think of black?
Closest black thing to you?
The jacket I’m wearing.
Are you sophisticated or silly?
Both! Sophisticatedly silly.
Do you have a lot of secrets?
Sort of. I hold a lot of “secrets,” in having complete privacy and confidentiality for my clients. And, even outside of coaching, if someone tells me something in confidence, it stays in confidence.
What’s the new black?
Why does there need to be a new black? I do think that not everyone should wear black. In fact, I think it’s generally just worn too much. More people should wear more colors. Experiment! Have fun!
